Introduction

Ecos Homes (the new name for South West Eco Homes) demonstrates in real life terms the potential and practicalities of a new ecological approach to building sustainably and living sustainably.

Its pioneering and award-winning project in Langport, Great Bow Yard, demonstrates a working example of sustainable and mixed-use development with 12 stunningly designed eco-homes and a Grade II listed warehouse. The warehouse has now been renovated and currently provides serviced offices, workshops and a river side bistro.

Ecos Homes is embarking on several new projects this year; including Stawell near Street, and Merriott both in Somerset, and in Bridport, Dorset, that will build on its experience from Great Bow Yard.

The Developments

Stawell

Five pioneering eco-homes, which will be some of the best low carbon homes in the country, are being built in the delightful village of Stawell. Three terraced three-bed homes and two four-bed detached will complement the conservation area and enhance the quality of life for residents, whilst having minimal impact on the environment.

The range of properties will offer generous living accommodation with a number benefiting from space for a home office. The terraced properties incorporate internal sunspaces and natural light is an important part of the design of all the homes. The internal courtyard allows for parking and car ports, with an electric car charging point. Shared facilities will be managed by a residents association.

The new homes will blend both traditional and contemporary design to offer homes that utilise sustainable technologies such as solar panels and wood pellet stoves. This will help to ensure a healthy internal environment with low heating and electricity bills. Specially landscaped gardens will support wildlife and provide residents with space to grow their own produce.

Stawell is situated in the lea of the Polden Hills, above the Somerset Levels near several designated havens for wildlife. The site was originally used as an apple store.

The new residents are very pleased with their new sustainable homes; Chrissie Amey, owner of a three-bed house, says of the development, “I just fell in love with what they were trying to do here – change the way things are built – and I love the design. This is very easy to live in and it’s an exciting home to live in.”

Bridport

North Allington Road is at the west end of Bridport only a few minutes drive from the coast at West Bay. Here five, three bedroom, terraced houses with car spaces will be built by Ecos Homes. Importantly, the terraced three-bed homes will achieve a five star rating under the recent BRE [Building Research Establishment] Code for Sustainable Homes standard, ensuring there is no net carbon emitted from domestic hot water and heating systems, fans, pumps or lighting.

In order to meet Code Five criteria the homes will have: -

- exceptionally high levels of insulation (i.e. Warmcell)
- passive solar design to make maximum use of the sun's energy
- solar panels to provide hot water
- solar p.v. panels to provide an offset to electrical costs
- heat exchangers to deliver heat to the essential living areas
- natural paints and plasters (clay) to give a healthy internal environment
- wood pellet fired boilers (which should rarely be required)
