We asked our architect to renovate an ordinary 1960's house to make it desirable in the 21st century and he has achieved this very well.
The staircase was moved to give 3 of the 4 bedrooms a share of the spectacular view to the rear while the front bedroom enjoys a wooded aspect to farmland.
Our main aim was to take a step towards 2050 living in a way which might be a prototype for many houses of this type. Of course the world may not combine to tackle the problems of climate change, in which case this is just an energy efficient and attractive family house. Our prayer is that the world will tackle the problems and that our grandchildren may not suffer for the pollution we have created.
We have avoided wood burning solutions, solar or wind power as we do not see that these could be applied efficiently to the majority of the housing stock. Power generation is best done by wind offshore and other large national projects. The public task is to use the green electricity to the best advantage.
Ground source heating does this to the best advantage and we have written a book on its construction and efficient use. Turning 1 kw of electricity into 3 to 4 kw of heat looks very important to the future of the planet and we are taking the measurements to show how effective it can be in the home.
As a result of this and the other measures we have taken the Energy Saving Trust SuperHomes project has awarded us SuperHome status. We also expect an income commencing in October 2011 from the government incentive.
You are welcome to visit Marchwood to see for yourself without any obligation, either by appointment or as part of a SuperHome open day.
