Introduction
The Old Convent is the latest development from Nick's Renovations.
Nick Jones began his renovation career with a clear objective: to transform neglected buildings into high-quality family homes. Over time, he recognised a deeper opportunity - to contribute meaningfully to the fight against climate change through the built environment. This realisation led to a strategic shift in focus: the retro-fitting of historic properties. By combining architectural heritage with modern sustainability, Nick creates elegant eco-homes that honour the past while embracing the future. Though retro-fitting presents greater technical challenges than new-build eco homes, Nick approaches the complexity with both commitment and enthusiasm, driven by a belief in the lasting value of this work.
Unlike many in his field, Nick still works hands-on at each site, staying intimately connected to the building and every detail of its evolution.

The Development
The Old Convent - Modern living in a heritage building
Four beautiful eco-apartments in a wonderful Edwardian building, previously a school and a convent, right in the heart of the historic market town of Abergavenny. There is something for everyone: young professionals, families looking for their first home, downsizers and nature-lovers.
Estimated monthly energy bills are estimated to be as low as £55, saving £2,000–£3,000 per year compared with typical period conversions. An anticipated EPC of B is highly unusual for a retro-fit, and something that Nick Jones is rightly proud of.

These thoughtfully crafted apartments offer so much more than just a place to live—they offer a lifestyle. Perfectly positioned within easy walking distance of Abergavenny’s renowned independent shops and restaurants (including the award-winning Angel Hotel), and with the majestic Black Mountains right on your doorstep, this is town-and-country living at its very best.
Each apartment enjoys its own private outdoor space, designed for comfort and calm. The upper-floor homes boast unexpectedly spacious balconies with far-reaching views of the Sugarloaf, perfectly oriented to enjoy the light—and blissfully not overlooked. Meanwhile, the garden apartments open onto secluded, private gardens, lovingly restored from the time when the site was a convent. Originally planted by the resident nuns as a tranquil sanctuary, the gardens still offer that same sense of peace today. Imagine stepping straight out to your garden or balcony with your morning coffee, birdsong in the air and the gentle rhythm of nature all around you.
Nick Jones designed eco-credentials into the apartments from the beginning. Each individual apartment, and the whole building, is a harmonious system in which everything works together to use as little energy as possible while keeping you warm in winter and cool in summer. The seven eco-features are:
1. Solar panels for your electricity, taking full advantage of the sunny south-facing roof
2. Properly and thoroughly insulated with 65mm of insulation on the external walls, 60mm on the ground floors and 400mm in the attic - with the bricks treated beforehand to further retain heat.
3. Embedded infrared ceiling heating, made from ultra-light and ultra-thin material which keeps the whole room at an even temperature, responds to your demands quickly, and requires much less energy than a traditional gas-fired boiler and radiators system.
4. Sunamp hot water technology, using Thermino heat batteries. Sunamp Thermino batteries are like reusable heat packs for your home’s hot water. They store heat efficiently and give you hot water whenever you need it — all without needing a big, bulky tank or a gas boiler. You can recharge them using solar power if it’s light, or timed to use cheap off-peak power.
5. Expertly fitted, high-quality windows resulting in an excellent air tightness testing score of less than three (2.65), which means that there are virtually no drafts, or brickwork-damaging condensation. This is highly unusual for period properties, and is a testament to our team’s skilled work.
6. Mechanical ventilation heat recovery system, which cleans the air and brings filtered air in and out of the house - if it's a hot summer, this can be set to purge hot air out of the house and swap for cold air - no need to run expensive fans.
7. All the heating can be digitally controlled via HIVE thermostats or your smartphone - a warm welcome when you get home, without wasting power when you're out.
It’s not just the eco-features which make these apartments easy on your bank balance. The extremely high build quality will ensure that other ongoing costs are impressively low. The four apartment owners will share the freehold and can directly manage spending, eliminating the need for a management company. Monthly contributions for insurance, maintenance, and repairs are estimated to be just £26 – a huge saving on other local average service charges.
These apartments represent a rare opportunity to enjoy elegant, sustainable living in one of Wales’s most desirable towns. With every detail carefully considered—from peaceful gardens and mountain views to cutting-edge eco-technology and low running costs—they offer a home that is both beautiful and practical, today and for the future. Whether you’re looking to downsize, invest, or simply live more lightly on the planet, this is a place where comfort, community, and conscience come together effortlessly.
